A Nature Survey of St Boniface Industrial Park

A friend had recommended that I check out St. Boniface Industrial Park while waiting for work to be done on my vehicle at a nearby shop. There was a surprising amount of nature in the area.

The Industial park is squeezed between a railcard, a major retail area, and some residential areas. It has a range of businesses, ranging from manufacturing and metal fabrication to head offices. There are a few ponds and natural areas left tucked away in the corners and they are teeming with wildlife.

There were many cormorants enjoying the water.

There were plenty of ducks around, but this mallard chick was my favourite.

There was a variety of other birds. I was able to catch a photo of this eastern kingbird and a juvenile green heron (unusual in Manitoba), but I did see man other birds including a nice goldfinch.

There was also a number of native wildflowers and grasses in the area. I noticed big bluestem, a variety of purple asters, cupped gumweed, prairie roses, pussytoes, prairie sage, false sunflower, Canada goldenrod, and some rare flowers meadow blazing star and bottle gentian.
